The Culture of Football – Melba Z on the MKE

 In Community Involvement, Neighborhood News

Tis the Season!  Football season, that is!

Whether you root for a high school/college/ professional team…whether you wear Green Bay Green & Gold, Bucky Badger Red or some other combination…whether you sing Cheese and Packers in the shower or dance the UW half-time (When You Say WIS-CON-SIN, You’ve Said It All) polka…you know that FOOTBALL has arrived.

Not to be outdone, the vital Milwaukee Art scene is tapping into the football culture by offering some culture of their own:
In Tandem Theatre, located downtown at 10th & Wisconsin, starts their season with Any Given Monday, a hilarious satire of rabid football fans and their long-suffering families.  Join couch potatoes Lenny and Mick, as they deal with life issues through ‘the game’, and wonder why the ladies just don’t get it.  It runs October 2-October 25.  This play has a surprise ending that will make you laugh out loud in spite of yourself!

A serious study of a great football coach, The Life and Times of Vince Lombardi, is a must-see for all arm-chair quarterbacks.  Saddle up and travel west to hone your vicarious coaching skills at the Oconomowoc Arts Center on October 24th.  Actor John Pinero embodies ‘the Vince’ in this one-man show.  And he even looks like Lombardi!

Check your iTunes account for release of ‘At Least I’m Not a Bears Fan’ by Milwaukee-area blues/funk band, Live at Nine.  Check their website for gigs around the Milwaukee area.  You can strut your stuff in style – foam cheese heads encouraged!

If Badger spirit is more your style, it may be time to take a collegiate approach, and consider what you have ‘red’ lately!  Boswell Books, nestled on the corner of Downer and Webster Avenues on the east side, has an amazing selection of football-themed books, sure to pique your interest.  Whether you enjoy a photo study of the Badgers teams through the years (and don’t forget the band!), an in-depth analysis of the team, or a biography of a favorite player, Boswell has what you are looking for and has a knowledgable staff able to help you locate it.

So remember when you are viewing the game with friends at your favorite watering hole, that Milwaukee has a lot of football culture to offer!
